RRL Book Club stickerThe Riverina Regional Library Book Club is for anyone who would like to read a varied selection of books and meet with others to chat about them, maybe over tea and cake or wine and cheese. The library provides ten copies of one title plus background notes and discussion questions. Clubs meet from February to November reading ten titles over the year. Contact Anne Reardon at Wagga Wagga City Library to find out more.

This website can be used to form an online community of all RRL Book Club members. Join up and start discussions with other members about the books you are reading or things your club is doing that you really enjoy.

After your club has discussed a particular book why not sign in and write your thoughts about it in a new thread at the bottom of the discussion guide page? We can build a record of what the different clubs thought about each book.

To read is to learn and grow, to experience, to empathise, to understand, to marvel, to wonder, to laugh and to cry. To live other lives in other places and times, to deepen a connection with place. Reading is immensely important to me. It shapes my personality and identity as do all experiences. I am a fuller, more rounded person because I read. I am able to imagine and empathise with others. I learn things that help me in my daily life and I experience joy, sorrow and relaxation when I read.

IKW End of year gathering and final meeting 0 Oct 26 2009, 3:10 AM EDT by IKW

Hi Kim and other book club members,
Easy to Please is having a final mtg next Wednesday, three weeks before the gathering at the Library. We have also decided to meet again in December to watch the film of our last book, Disgrace, by Coetzee. That movie is relatively recent and I think some of our members have seen it already.
ETP has also canvassed for new members since our numbers fell during the year. One new member started in the winter, and we have two who will start next month. It has taken almost all the year for us to realise that meetings would usually be 5-7 members - for various reasons people can't always be there. That has turned out to be a positive, because like most book clubs, members host meetings on a rotating basis so 10 can be quite cosy!
Looking forward to the end of year gathering to meet other readers. Til then, Happy reading, Ineke.

Well our book club hasn't read this one yet. In fact I haven't even heard of this book before. I find it really hard to like a book when I dislike the characters so I imagine I wouldn't like The secret history of Donna Tartt by the sounds of it!
We're gearing up for our final meeting in about a months time. Hope you've enjoyed the book club again this year. We're had some terrible books and some really good ones as well. I think the one that people struggled with the most was Catch 22.

IKW The Secret History Donna Tartt 0 Oct 7 2009, 9:09 PM EDT by IKW

Members gathered last night to talk about this novel. We were looking for redeeming features to praise, some relief to our widely held sense of dislike. We discussed the absence of an acceptable moral code to direct the young adults who are the core characters. On the whole, we thought they behaved badly, like selfish, self-indulgent brats and sometimes like animals. Reading was a struggle. The book was hard to get in to, essentially because the characters were so unpleasant. We agreed that The Secret History would have scant hope of making it to our short list of recommended reads. Julie did a marvellous job leading the discussion.
